The Crew
Allow me to tell you a story of how a lotus crew grew to take root in the muddy waters to eventually bloom in glory. Purple Lotus started off as a rap collective in South Sacramento, as a group of friends who wanted to start making music. Beats and Rhymes make my cypher complete, first there were the freestyles then the need to record what they were saying. The Lotus Pirates had knowledge of how to record but not the tech. Once they got their hands on a computer it was time to set sail. In the beginning the only approach they knew was to rap like it was 2007, meaning all the songs were made on industry beats. After complications with a local producer they decided to start making their own beats. This was the start of another chapter for this group of yout. All successful sails will meet the winds of changes. In the midst of evolution the Lotus Pirates decided to make Najee Omari the crew's captain. The goal was to create a safe space where anyone could come and record, all were welcome as long as they respected the environment and its inhabitants. Even the best adventures will eventually come to a path with rough waters. Sometimes it's mutiny, other times the keel of the ship you love so much will crack on you. There are many reasons why a crew might not last. Little did Najee know that this would not be the end but a hiatus. Shafi was always part of the crew but until they decided to start “One Mo Piece” the Purple Lotus had recessed to a slumber under the muddy waters. Today the Purple Lotus Pirates blooms beautifully as much more than a rap collective. Small but mighty they have reached into artist development, media entertainment and marketing. Know the root of it all tho is the music.
